Meet Richard: Expert Coach in Sports and Mountain Biking

Richard has been coaching and teaching sports in Metro Vancouver for over 30 years. He joined the mountain biking community in 2010, initially leading group rides with the Vancouver Mountain Bike Meetup Group. He completed Endless Biking’s Mountain Bike Instructor Training (MBIT) Program in 2013 and obtained his Level 1 Instructor certification from the Professional Mountain Bike Instructor Association (PMBIA) in 2015. Today, he is a certified PMBIA Ride Guide focused on safety, skill development, and rider confidence. He also serves as a Trailforks ambassador for the Tri-Cities area and collaborates regularly with the Tri-Cities Off-Road Cycling Association (TORCA).

On snow, Richard is a Certified Level 2 Instructor with the Canadian Ski Instructor Alliance (CSIA) and Professional Ski Instructors of Canada (PSIC), and is currently working toward his Level 3 certification. He has taught at Grouse Mountain Resort for over 20 seasons. His commitment to accessibility includes a Level 1 Canadian Adaptive Snowsports (CADS) certification and volunteer work with Vancouver Adaptive Snow Sports (VASS). Additionally, he is an Entry-level Alpine Canada ski coach and holds NCCP certification for soccer and baseball.

With over 15 years of experience bridging the gap between snow and trail, Richard leverages the shared skills of balance, terrain awareness, and confidence-building across both disciplines. Whether carving turns on snow or navigating singletrack, his lessons align with industry shifts toward year-round programming, helping athletes maximize seasonal opportunities and sustain long-term engagement.

Richard holds a Canadian Red Cross Emergency First Aid CPR/AED Level C certification and is equipped to respond to trail emergencies. He retired from corporate life in 2014 and holds a BA in Economics and an MBA in Information Technology Management. Based in Port Coquitlam, he is married with three sons and four grandsons.
